Proibido

Bar • Shop Small: Tapas Bar • Live From: Montmartre, Paris

“Montmartre is a city of two faces. To the world it is a touristic place with the Sacré-Cœur, little streets, and coffee shops. When you’re in Montmartre it’s a whole different world. You see a lot of unique and creative people like artists, notable directors, and painters from all around who are submerged in this new wave of contemporary art. You will probably find some really great artist like Edson Castro drinking at Proibido and having a good time, or you can also find creators of fashion and musicians just making art. Montmartre is a place where you just meet so many interesting and different people.”

“Proibido in Montmartre is a very unique bar filled with a diversity of cultural movements. About 10 years ago, we had several creative activities taking place in a couple of different bars around here. This year we decided we wanted to be the best. It's not just about the music, people, and drinks; it's about keeping the community, our home, together.”

“The idea of Proibido was to create an exchange between the people, the artists and the bar. We try to do it regularly, not just the old fashioned way of having a concert at a bar, but by working around improvisation. We welcome new music, live painting, photographers, and directors to come in and show their work at any time; we enjoy that.”

“For us, it's not just about the culture of the neighborhood, but the culture of all of Paris and Europe. The fact is, art is necessary. We've asked some other bars to host live painting and contemporary dancers at times when we’ve been full, and they've been very accepting. We're trying to bring back the concept of Montmartre; the real Montmartre, which is where foreigners and artists from all over the world come together.”

“Sundays we start very early with musicians playing and live paintings taking place in the big wall. So far we've received a great reception from the community. We have a lot of people from the zone, and visitors drinking and just enjoying their time, both inside the bar and right outside.”

Want to show your work?

“We have some meetings to be specific, but basically if you have a film you can bring it in and we're open to it. It's the same for live painting. You can bring it in and we’re open to it. That's the point and it's been very good.”
